Important Announcement about Free 'No Smoking' Signs!

There have been quite a few calls over the past few days from community members who would like to obtain free ‘No Smoking’ signs. One Air Alliance has donated their remaining supply to the Health Department, specifically food inspectors that will be out working in the field, so that they might distribute signs as needed.  There are some signs still available.  The limited supply will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the locations listed below.  This is to make it easy for people to pick them up throughout town.  If you have a large order, please call ahead to assure that there will be enough signage available.

Contact One Air Alliance via phone at 417-380-3894 if you have any questions.  We encourage you to pass this information along.  Thank you!

Are you environmentally conscious?  Do you like to volunteer?  Grab a group of friends and register for No Butts About It on Saturday, April 16, at Drury University!  We are organizing groups of 2-4 friends or family members together to take part in a downtown beautification project.  The event will begin at Drury Circle where volunteers will sign in, pick up their t-shirts, and receive a map and short tutorial.  Then each team will adopt a street in downtown Springfield for a few hours and pick up trash-- especially cigarette butts!  The groups will meet back at Drury Circle for a FREE BBQ after the streets have been cleaned.

Please send an email to lochhaas1013@gmail.com with any questions and to register your team.  Include your team members' names and t-shirt sizes, the team leader's contact information, and the best 2-hour block between 10AM and 4PM on Saturday, April 16, 2011.  Times are not firm yet, but it will be around mid-day.  More information will be posted later.  We are flexible, though!  Come on out and pick up some volunteer hours while you're at it!

Congratulations to our gift certificate winners, and thank you to all who attended Shine a Light!
One Air Alliance's Shine a Light on Lung Cancer awareness event on Monday, November 1, 2010 was a huge success!  We hosted the event as part of a nationwide effort by the Lung Cancer Alliance to raise awareness about lung cancer.  Megan Creson, Lynda Crowder, and local restaurant owner Anton Tasich shared how their personal lives have been touched by lung cancer.  Connie Zimmerman, St. John's Oncology Program Coordinator, acted as our emcee, and Dr. Gary Hoos, Oncology Medical Director, spoke from the medical perspective.  We were even spotlighted on television that night and are hopeful that Shine a Light on Lung Cancer was able to raise awareness about the devastation of lung cancer and the consequences of secondhand smoke exposure.

We have a new contact number!  Please contact us with any questions, stories, or comments at 417.380.3894.

On Thursday, June 10, 2010, One Air Alliance held a press conference at the St. John's C.H. "Chub" O'Reilly Cancer Center which unveiled plans to introduce a comprehensive smokefree workplace ordinance to the Springfield City Council.  Featured speakers included Mayor Jim O'Neal, Kevin Gipson, Director of the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, Pat Duran, owner of Metropolitan Grill, and Carrie Reynolds, One Air Alliance co-chair.  For more information, view their press release here.

Springfield Air Quality Monitoring Study. An important new study showing the impact of secondhand smoke in Springfield public places. This study found that over 90% of the fine particle pollution could be attributed to secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance, but a serious health hazard… scientific evidence indicates that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
